Quarantine Diaries Vol. 3: The Kitchen

Welcome back to the quarantine diaries vol. 3. In this installment we are discussing kitchens. As our country is opening up more to social events and gatherings, it’s a great time to think about refreshing your kitchen as you prepare for gatherings.

Growing up in the military, I was exposed to the notion of dinner parties and gatherings for military affairs. As a result, the kitchen became an essential area to me that brings back memories of good times with friends and family. This area is such a versatile and important part of the home. Some call this the heart of the house.

So where do we even start when wanting to remodel the kitchen?

  1. Countertops and Cabinets

Two very important aesthetics in a kitchen are the countertops and cabinets. These are the very first impressions that people see when entering the kitchen. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that these two parts of the kitchen look and go with the feel you are going for. So it might be time to update your cabinets or refinish them. The same goes for your countertops. Think about upgrading to a granite or marble stone which will add value, dimension and aesthetics (and durability) to your kitchen.

2. Backsplash

The backsplash is another underutilized aesthetic that can really give life and add a fresh feel and look. Whether you are going for a modern or traditional look, there are several designs for creating an eye catching backsplash that will fit every style. First, subway tile is a classic while also being versatile.  For example, use dual colors to create a beautiful contrast that brings your kitchen to life. One of my favorite styles is the chevron pattern which creates a unique design that will be sure to improve your kitchen’s look. There are several other ideas for backsplashes such as using penny tiles, granite that matches your countertops, utilizing bold designs for tiles, and the list could go on. Have fun with the backsplash and tailor it to your style and taste.

3. Matching appliances

The next part of the kitchen that you should be thinking about are the appliances. These include large appliances such as your oven, stove, microwave, fridge, freezer, etc. and even smaller appliances like a mixer, toaster, blender, etc. To really create a good looking kitchen make sure that your appliances are the same colors whether that is black, silver, white, matte finish, glossy finish etc. Having appliances that complement one another will create a cohesive kitchen and will bring this area together very nicely. 4. Kitchen Dining Table

In many kitchens there is enough room to place a kitchen table or an island (which is a smaller table that can sometimes come with stools to place in the middle if room permits). Placing an island not only adds eating space, but can also be utilized as a workstation. Having a kitchen table allows space for everyone to sit down at family meals and enjoy time together which can create memorable family times. At Virginia Furniture Market we have a wide variety of small kitchen tables and islands that would work perfectly in your kitchen.
