The Quarantine Diaries, Volume 2

The Bedroom

This quarantine has us pinned up in the house way longer than we thought and quite honestly having some of us going a bit stir crazy! So let’s take our minds off everything happening in this world and talk about our bedrooms. In Vol. 1, we learned how to arrange our living room area to give it the optimal space and to feel inviting and homey.

As we move on to the bedroom, this is so important as it’s one of the three rooms in the home that are the most essential. This room is where we spend a majority of our time relaxing and sleeping (and sometimes working). Can you believe according to the New York Post, an average American will spend 36 years of their lifetime in their bed? Wow. As a designer this really motivates me to make my room all that it can be since I will spend so much of my life there. So, let’s begin with how we can improve our bedrooms since we will spend 36 years there.

  1. Cleanup Time

The age old question our mother asks, “is your room clean?” As a child, I did not like to clean my room and thought there was no point since it will just get messy again. However, over the years I have come to realize that my mother was right when she said “a clean room is a happy room.” Whenever I cleaned my room, I felt happier and definitely more relaxed. So the first piece of advice that I can give about the bedroom is declutter and organize your room. Pick up the clothes on the ground, make your bed, vacuum the floor, dust your furniture, throw out unnecessary items, etc. You’ll get a better night’s sleep after you do.

2. Rearrange

Now that your room is clean, it’s time to rearrange your furniture. This is an easy way to freshen up your room. Not only does cleaning create a more relaxing environment, but also switching up how your furniture sits will give you a fresh feel. So start by looking at your bed’s placement because there is such a thing called the commanding position which is where you want your bed. By aligning your bed with the door in your room this allows you to be in ‘command of your life’ creating a positive and relaxing feeling throughout your room. One last tip to give about rearranging your furniture is symmetry. Make sure that when you set your room up with furniture that there is symmetry flowing through it. For example, making sure there are two nightstands on each side of the bed. You will not regret giving your room a little t.l.c with rearranging furniture.

3. Time for an Upgrade

We have all gone through moving out of our parents’ home and getting hand-me-down furniture that is mismatched and worn. Although some of that furniture may last for years, there comes a point in our life when we need to upgrade our furniture. Now might be the perfect time as you look at your metal bed frame and old oak nightstand sitting together. Above is one of the newer and more popular groups at Virginia Furniture Market Stores, the Claiborne Bedroom group. This antique white bed with black metal accents and handles will surely lighten up and bring character to your bedroom. It’s already a customer favorite!

4. Update Your Bedroom

Along with replacing furniture is upgrading the textiles in your room. This entails bedding sets, accent pillows, throws and rugs. At Virginia Furniture Market we offer great textiles from our Olliix bedding line and Loloi rugs. Above is an amazing bedding set from Ollix, the Imani comforter set and Brea Ivory rug. These accents can go a long way with lightening up your room by also adding texture and life to the bedroom group from point 3. Upgrading your textiles makes a world of a difference. This can spice up your bedroom life too. 😉

I hope you enjoy these simple tips and tricks to use during this quarantine time to spruce your bedroom up and bring your room back to life.
